Often, when I am speaking with a group of high school students about the college search, I will ask them what they are most afraid of in the college search. Their answers are usually the same:
“I am afraid I won’t be admitted to the college I want to go to.”
It’s hard to blame them. Our culture generates books, articles, and films about how difficult it is to be admitted to “competitive” colleges. It is this emphasis on scarcity that is driving students to worry about every aspect of their applications. In fact, 75% of high school students believe that if they make one single mistake on their college application that it will hurt their chances of being admitted.
One of the first mindsets we teach our students is to “love the places that love you.” This idea teaches our students the importance of having an appreciation for their own self-worth, which allows them to respond to the inevitable “yes’s” and “no’s” that come with applying to college. We want our students to spend precisely zero seconds worrying about the schools who said no.
So with this in mind, we want to celebrate the “yes’s” and congratulate the graduating class of 2024 on an impressive college decision season. In a year of unknowns and endless FAFSA delays, this class stayed resilient and advocated for themselves beautifully.
The 114 different colleges that admitted at least one GEC student are as diverse as the students with whom we work. This year’s GEC graduating class features a Division 1 soccer player who has competed internationally with the U.S. Women’s National Team, several future doctors, an in-the-making astrophysicist, and dozens of thinkers, artists, dancers, and musicians. This year’s GEC class received more offers of admission and scholarship opportunities than any class before it.
Congratulations to the graduating class of 2024! Our team never gets tired of being in your cheering section!
Be on the lookout soon for a post highlighting which of these colleges were selected by our students for enrollment.
